On 25–26 September 2013, Vilnius will host to the conference “Unity in diversity: languages for mobility, jobs and active citizenship” to celebrate the European Day of Languages. The conference is organised jointly by the European Commission, the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, the State Commission for the Lithuanian Language and the Department of Translation and Interpretation Studies of Vilnius University, under the auspices of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council.
The conference is aimed at promoting a debate on the role of language competences to improve mobility, job opportunities and participation in democratic life. The conference will be organized around three main themes:

  • Language learning for mobility and work.
  • Translating and interpreting for active citizenship.
  • Languages in the digital domain.
  • Participants will come from a wide range of fields of expertise: academics and experts in multilingualism, language professionals, teachers, language technology specialists, terminologists but also policy makers, ONGs, business representatives, partners from the civil society and testimonials of successful projects. They will all gather to discuss themes linked to multilingualism, share experience and suggest solutions to promote language learning in Europe.

The outcomes of the conference will be disseminated and published on the website.
